What to expect
During the hike we will see the following points of interest:
Port of Kelnas
The port of Kelnas on Prangli Island is located on the north shore of the island and has turned from a former fishing port into a port of interest, where it is easy to come with your boat. The port can receive ships with a length of up to 25 m and a draft of up to 2.5 m with advance notice. There is also a gas station in the port.
Eestiranna cemetery and memorial
In the summer of 1941, the cargo steamer Eestirand was bombed by the Germans near the island of Prangli. The ship was on its way to Kroonlinna, and there were estimated to be more than 3,000 men on board, according to some reports, around 5,000, who were assigned to the mobilization of the Red Army.
The bombs hit the ship, one bomb exploded in the hold and the other under the bottom of the ship. The ship began to slowly sink, panic arose and some of the men jumped into the water. In the end, however, the ship did not sink, the captain was able to guide it to the ground near the island. However, over 200 men lost their lives during the events.
The dead, who were given up by the sea, were buried in a mass grave (called the Estonian beach cemetery) on the Vanakabel cape on the island of Prangli, and a memorial has been erected to commemorate the event.
Prangli lighthouses
There are two lighthouses on Prangli. The Pakri North-west lighthouse, a powerful stone building, was built in 1960. The second guide to the lighthouses is located in the south-east part of the island – this is the south-east fire tank of Prangli
Prangli Laurentsius Church and cemetery
Prangli Laurentius Church
is one of the smallest wooden churches in Estonia, which was completed in 1848. Presumably, there was a chapel on the same spot a few centuries earlier, which, according to legend, was built by Finnish sealers who got into trouble at sea. There is also an old cemetery in the churchyard
The remains of a German plane
The remains of a German plane are located a little further from the Eestiranna cemetery. In 1944, battles took place over the island. The plane crashed, but the pilot survived. The local people took her to the mainland by boat, in return they received parachute silk, from which the local girls could sew their wedding dresses
Wandering boulders
There are many boulders on the island. The most famous of them are Kotkakivi near the lighthouse (named after eagles used to land there) and Punane kivi (circumference of 31 m), the legend of which says that women who slide from this rock should soon become pregnant.
Prangli People’s House
It was built in 1954 and is located in the village of Idaotsa on the island. In this building, various joint events are held, interest groups, a post office and a library operate.
Prangli primary school
There is a school on the island, where at the moment there are more teachers than students. Education began in the Uustalu farm already in 1869, the school building was completed in 1900.
Prangli gas lamp
In 1924, the search for oil began in Prangli, but in the process, a natural gas deposit was discovered, which still secretes gas to this day. It was thought that the island holds large gas reserves and a gas well was built, but the initial estimates were not correct and this business was left unfinished.
Interesting fact: Prangli island also has an anthem, the words and tune of which were written by a local man, Einart Tammsaar.
