What to expect

During the hike we will see the following points of interest:

Big and little Taevaskoja

A 22.5-meter-high sandstone outcrop, named Suur Taevaskoda, rises on the banks of the Ahja River’s primeval valley. It is soil that has been polished out by the river over the centuries and is beautifully displayed today. On the outcrop, you can see nest passages explored by birds and cross-sections of soil layers that have settled down over time.

Moving upstream, those interested are greeted by the Väike Taevaskoda, which is 13 meters high. The outcrop is characterized by 2 caves studied by sources: Neitsikoobas and Emaläte. Väike Taevaskoda has also gained fame as the filming location of the movie “The Last Relic”.

Kiidjärve watermill

An eye-catching building by the river Ahja, which worked with intermittent success until 1991. The same complex as the flour mill also included a sawmill on the other side of the river, which has been demolished today. Today, the concrete dam of the mill has been removed and replaced by a bridge with the original appearance of the 1930s, to allow free movement on the river.

Bunker of the forest brothers

We pass through the place where the local forest brothers hid after World War II. It is believed that there may have been almost 15,000 forest brothers in all of Estonia who resisted the foreign power and believed with their actions that Estonia could soon be free.

Saesaare hydroelectric plant

The hydroelectric power plant located in the southern part of the Saesaare lake. The station, which started working in 1952, has been renovated and still produces electricity today.

Kiidjärve hiking trail

An 11 km hiking trail built to enjoy the primeval nature of the Ahja river, with most of the local attractions on the way.
