What to expect
During the hike we will see the following points of interest:
City hall
Linnahall, located west of Tallinn’s cruise port, was ready for the 1980 Olympic Games. As the honor and glory of the Soviet Union, the building included an ice rink, a harbor, a cafe and a concert hall. Linnahall was the only public object by the sea in Soviet times and was widely used by the townspeople. Today, the neglected building has been used more as a canvas for street artists.
Tallinn Old Town
The old town of Tallinn, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, invites you with its medieval milieu and well-preserved buildings. The network of buildings and streets built in the Middle Ages is largely preserved to this day, providing an exceptional opportunity to experience historic architecture and modern conveniences. In the Old Town, you can find countless cafes, restaurants, theaters, clubs, residential buildings, galleries and museums. The pearl of the old town is one of the most important squares in Estonia – Town Hall Square.
Telliskivi creative town
Telliskivi Loomelinnak, which brings colors and freshness to the cityscape, has established itself on the site of the former Baltic Railway factory. 250 companies, numerous shops and food places operate here. A former industrial area has become a wildly popular leisure spot where you can enjoy all forms of art. Not only art has found its way to the campus, but also several innovative startups. Here, business and culture go hand in hand
Balti Jaam and market
If the destination or starting point is Tallinn, you can most likely end up at Balti station. From Balti station, passenger trains move in different directions in Estonia, be it an electric train to Paldiski or a diesel train to Valka. A few hundred meters away is Balti Jaama Turg, which was renovated in 2017. The market is home to up to 300 traders offering food, handicrafts, antiques and more.
Patarei sea defense
A magnificent fortified defense complex on the shores of Tallinn Bay, which has performed various tasks throughout history. Originally built on the orders of the Russian Tsar Nicholas I, the fortress was supposed to provide protection against threats from the sea, which it did, but with the development of armaments, the building lost its intended purpose and was later used as a military barracks and prison. Patarei prison closed its doors for good in 2005. Today, cultural events are organized in the Patarei sea fortress, and by 2026 it is planned to build offices, galleries, cafes, a museum and shops there
Lennusadam
As part of the Sea Museum, the renovated reinforced concrete shell seaplane hangar is an interesting and interactive stopover to learn about Tallinn’s maritime history. Over 200 authentic exhibits, traveling exhibitions, exciting simulators, boats and sailboats can be found in the hangar and harbor with a century-long history. The most important exhibit of the airport is Estonia’s only preserved submarine Lembit.
Noblessner
The former most important submarine factory of Tsarist Russia has undergone a real transformation today. The former military industry has become a beautiful seaside public place in Tallinn, which is adorned with new developments with outstanding architecture, a beautiful beach promenade, a harbor, eateries and historical buildings for cultural events. The former industrial buildings of Noblessner today house Proto’s discovery factory and art center Kai.
Mine harbor
From a distance, we can also see the former mine harbor and its eye-catching mine warehouse building, where the Estonian Navy and Guard Battalion operate today. The mine harbor was built with the purpose of servicing the minesweepers and torpedo boats of the Russian Baltic Fleet.
