Introduction
To spend time by the light blue lagoons, you don’t necessarily have to travel to a warm country, we have them from our own hands. To do this, you have to take the direction to the Aidu quarry in Ida-Virumaa. The former oil shale quarry has become like fjords with light blue lagoons, on the shores and mountains of which active holidays can be enjoyed. If that’s not fun, what is? The quarry, which has been operating for 38 years, closed its doors in 2012 due to depletion of reserves, and since nature does not tolerate an empty place, the lower areas of the quarry have been filled with water by now. There are a lot of tracks there, there are also meters of ascent and descent, perhaps the perfect landscape to measure kilometers with our capable electric bikes.
We are waiting for you to discover Aidu’s career. Get ready and go! See more in the “What to expect” section.

What to expect

During the hike we will see the following points of interest:

Sipelgamägi ( ant hill)
Since Esku, the largest excavator of the USSR and the whole of Europe, was working in Aidu, it was necessary to build an equally high hill for maintenance work on the machine’s boom. The excavator itself was the height of a 22-story building and weighed 4,100 tons!

Rowing channel
A rowing channel 2.5 km long and 174 meters wide has been dug for the Aidu water sports center. It is one of the largest in Europe and you won’t find another like it within a 1000 km radius.

Aidu adventure landscapes
Tens of kilometers of exciting trails that will not leave even experienced adventurers cold.

Aidu wind park
In 2012, the construction of the Sõnajalgade wind farm began, of which only 2 of the 33 wind turbines were completed. The reason was that the height stipulated in the project was exceeded. Above all, higher than permitted winds disrupt the operation of air surveillance radars. Construction work on the wind farm can continue in 2024 when a new air surveillance radar starts working, with which height restrictions will disappear.

Aidu spring
Aidu’s lakes get part of their water from passages filled with groundwater from the former Kohtla mine, from where the water presses into the lake.

Aidu Nõmme fire place
We make a stop at the RMK campfire, where it’s good to rest your body and take time out for a moment.
