Introduction
Rummu Quarry is an extremely exciting and special place only 45 minutes from Tallinn. Here, beautiful nature and somewhat dark history meet. An old limestone mine has turned into a lake with crystal clear water, at the bottom of which is a unique underwater world with forests, cliffs, prison ruins and mining equipment. On the shore of the quarry rises the famous Rummu Ash mountain and the abandoned Murru prison. Only a few kilometers away from the quarry is the historic Padise monastery, the manor complex, the hill and beautiful trails in the pine forest. We will also pass by the Kalju stage to look at a place where people like to gather and enjoy what Estonian artists have to offer. What to expect

During the hike we will see the following points of interest:

Paekalda Holiday Center

The hike starts and ends at Paekalda Holiday Center, located on the shore of Rummu Quarry. A place that offers accommodation, seminar rooms and various possibilities for spending an active holiday. In addition to cycling, it is possible to enjoy life on the water, for example, using a raft, sup-board, canoe or raft.

Vasalemma manor

An excellent example of how to use local limestone, or Vasalemma marble, for construction. The main building in the English Neo-Gothic style was built between 1892 and 1894 and is considered one of the most beautiful of its kind in Estonia. The manor complex also included a dairy, a vodka factory and a water tower-windmill. The manor was founded by Thomas von Ramm. Since 1919, various schools have operated in the manor, and today the manor building is used by the Vasalemma Primary School.

Rummu township, prison and ash mountain

The region of Vasalemma and Rummu is known in history as a place where there are abundant limestone deposits, the vernacular “Vasalemma Marble.” Due to this, the Rummu prison was built in 1938, the prisoners of which could be employed in the quarry, because according to the belief, work is supposed to raise decent people from them. The quarry created during the mining has been filled with water today, and due to its exceptionally clean water and underwater attractions, it has become a real mecca for divers from Estonia and abroad. Of course, you can’t miss the ash hill rising on the shore of the lake, which is formed from the residual product of mining, i.e. tailings.

Padise Monastery

At the farthest edge of the bike ride, we find the Padise monastery. Padise Monastery is considered the best preserved monastery in Estonia. It started to be built in the 14th century and lasted almost a century and a half. The exterior of the monastery, preserved today, gives an idea of its long history. The monastery has been used both for its intended purpose, as a residential building and as a fortress during various wars. Thanks to its chapel with very good acoustics, the monastery has been used as a venue for various musical events.

Padise health trails

After the monastery, we move to the Padise health trails, which meander through the pine forests next to the Kloostri river. As the riverside area is blessed with valleys and slopes, there is something for everyone, be it nerve-wracking descents or exhilarating runs along a soft forest road. Depending on your wishes, you can choose between different trails, the longest of which is as much as 6.3 km long.

Padise forest hill and RMK fire place

On the banks of the Kloostri river, the Padise forest hill of nearly 3,300 square meters stretches. The fortress was not used as a permanent residence, but instead for protection purposes. The forest hill, surrounded by high river meanders and raised ramparts, was perfectly suited for this purpose. The castle was active during the Viking era and was one of the most important ports in the area at that time, as it was not far from the sea. Nowadays, the city hill is a favorite place for both hikers and cyclists. On forest hill you can also find the RMK campfire, where it is convenient to rest your body and exchange impressions during the hike.

Adventurous forest trail

We head back to Paekalda Holiday Center in a circle from the other side of Rummu lake. A narrow forest trail that cannot be accessed by car is a real treat to end the trip. On the way back, we will make another detour and explore the military bunkers hidden by Lake Rummu.
