What to expect
During the hike we will see the following points of interest:
City hall
Linnahall, located west of Tallinn’s cruise port, was ready for the 1980 Olympic Games. As the honor and glory of the Soviet Union, the building included an ice rink, a harbor, a cafe and a concert hall. Linnahall was the only public object by the sea in Soviet times and was widely used by the townspeople. Today, the neglected building has been used more as a canvas for street artists.
Tallinn Old Town
The old town of Tallinn, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, invites you with its medieval milieu and well-preserved buildings. The network of buildings and streets built in the Middle Ages is largely preserved to this day, providing an exceptional opportunity to experience historic architecture and modern conveniences. In the Old Town, you can find countless cafes, restaurants, theaters, clubs, residential buildings, galleries and museums. The pearl of the old town is one of the most important squares in Estonia – Town Hall Square.
Russalka monument
Walking along the Pirita Promenade, one of Tallinn’s best-known landmarks will surely catch your eye – the 16-meter-high Russalka monument – an angel standing on a tall granite pillar, pointing in the direction where the Russalka ship went north. It is the best work of Estonia’s first sculptor, which has been attracting the eyes of passers-by since 1902.
Park of Kadriorg
If you want to enjoy greenery and beautiful architecture in Tallinn, you should head towards Kadrioru Park. One of the most prominent castle parks in Estonia and Northern Europe invites both locals and guests to explore. The gem of the park is the fully restored Kadrioru Castle with its Upper and Lower gardens. In the park you can also find the office building of the President of the Republic, museums, Luige ponds and much more.
Lauluväljak
As you know, Estonians are a people of song, and as a confirmation of this, we have the grand and much-loved Tallinn Song Square to show you. A place where Estonians have come together again and again to demonstrate their unity and unwavering will to be independent. The singing revolution took place here in 1988, in which 300,000 people, or every third Estonian, allegedly participated. This event was an important milestone in achieving independence from foreign rule. In addition to singing parties, people come to the singing square to enjoy concerts, festivals, exhibitions, cultural and sports events and, of course, the enchanting views of Tallinn Bay.
Maarjamäe memorial site
On Maarjamäe you can find the memorial to the victims of Estonian communism, the German military cemetery and the Soviet-era memorial to the fallen Red Army soldiers. Different nationalities, ideologies and emotions meet in the complex with a long history.
Pirita Harbor and Olympic Hotel
The promenade that starts from the city center and runs along the seashore ends at the Pirita River, where you can find the port, the bathing beach and the Olympic complex. It is one of the most popular summer resorts among the people of Tallinn, which has been attracting people for decades. Pirita gained its greater fame as the host of the 1980 Olympic regatta, for which the buildings built are still in use today.
Pirita Monastery
On the right bank of the mouth of the Pirita River, the ruins of the largest nunnery in Old Livonia rise. Today, the monastery, which is used as a beloved concert venue and museum, has become an irreplaceable part of the cityscape. Next to the ruins of St. Birgitta’s monastery, we can also find a modern monastery complex, blessed in 2001.
