What to expect
During the hike we will see the following points of interest:
Haapsalu bishop castle
The Haapsalu Bishop’s Castle is the city’s best-known attraction, where concerts, festivals and theater performances are also organized. The castle, built in the 13th century, is open to guests, and whoever is interested can take a closer look at this gem. In the castle you can also find the Cathedral restored in the 1960s, which is associated with the legend of the White Lady.
Haapsalu promenade
In 1831, a half-kilometer long promenade was built in Haapsalu, worthy of a resort town. The Kuursaal, decorated with wooden lace ornaments, was added to the ensemble in 1898. Today, the promenade is over a kilometer long and a popular attraction in the beloved summer town. On the promenade you can find the Kuursaal, the Source Pavilion, boat rental, children’s playground, sundial and Tchaikovsky’s bench.
Haapsalu railway station
Trains no longer go to Haapsalu, but the magnificent railway station still stands today. Since Haapsalu was known as a resort town at the beginning of the 20th century, the local landowners proposed to build a railway branch from Keila to Haapsalu. The idea was also supported by Russian Emperor Nicholas II. Since the resort town had to receive crowned heads as well, it was decided to build a headquarters building worthy of the heads of state in Haapsalu.
Kiltsi airfield
Next to Haapsalu, on an area of 325 ha, there is a 2.5 km long Kiltsi airfield, which was used by the USSR. At the time when the USSR collapsed and began to withdraw its troops from Estonia, 38 MiG-23 fighter jets were in use at the airport. From that time, the aircraft hangars and the concrete runway have been preserved to this day. The airport is a popular place for cross-country racers and is also used as a venue for car acceleration competitions.
Ungru manor
The manor was built in 1893-1899 by Ewald von Ungern-Sternberg. According to the legend, the landlord built it for his lover, who was willing to marry and move out of her father’s noble castle only if he built the same one for her. The manor was quickly erected and under the roof by 1899, but then the work stopped. According to legend, because the landlord’s beloved died, according to another theory, because of a lack of money. The manor was seriously damaged in World War II. In 1968, the then commander of the airfield had a third of the ruins of the manor moved to fill the runway. The remaining castle is still in ruins.
